What is Rotate PDF?

Rotate the pages of a PDF, either all at once or one at a time. Every page appears as a thumbnail showing how it currently sits, so you can turn just the ones that are wrong. The change is lossless and nothing is uploaded.

Rotate the pages that are wrong, not the whole document

This is the reason to use this one, and it matches how the problem actually arrives.

A scanned bundle rarely comes out uniformly sideways. Three pages went through the feeder the wrong way up, or someone photographed a couple of pages in landscape, and the rest of the document is perfectly fine. A tool that rotates everything cannot fix that — it just moves the problem to the other pages.

Here every page is rendered as a thumbnail in a grid, and each one rotates independently. Click the three that are wrong, leave the other forty alone, and save once. The quick buttons at the top — rotate all left, all right, all 180° — cover the other common case, where the entire scan came in turned.

The thumbnails show the rotation your reader shows

A detail that saves a lot of guesswork. A PDF page can already carry a rotation setting, which is why a page can look upright in your reader while the underlying page is stored sideways.

The grid reads that setting out of your file and displays each thumbnail already turned to match. So what you see in the grid is what your reader shows, and the pages that look wrong in the grid are exactly the pages that are wrong. You are correcting what you can see rather than working out what the file might be doing underneath.

The thumbnails are rendered small and quickly — they are there to identify pages, not to read them. If you need to check the content of a page before deciding, open the document alongside.

Nothing is re-rendered, so nothing is lost

Worth understanding, because it is the difference between this and a lot of alternatives.

Rotating here sets a rotation value on the page and changes nothing else. The page content is not redrawn, not re-compressed and not converted to an image. Consequences you get for free:

The file size barely changes. Text stays selectable and searchable. Scanned image quality is untouched — no second round of JPEG compression softening your scan. Form fields, links and bookmarks survive. And it is effectively instant, even on a 200-page document, because no pixels are being processed.

Some tools rotate by rendering each page to an image and rebuilding the PDF around it. That works, and it costs you every one of the things above — most painfully the selectable text, which becomes a picture of text.

The one honest trade-off

Because the rotation is stored as a property of the page rather than baked into the pixels, it depends on the program reading the file to honour it.

Every modern PDF reader, every browser and every current print driver does. Occasionally an older application, an unusual print workflow, or a script that extracts pages will ignore the setting and show the original orientation. It is uncommon, and it is worth knowing about if you are sending the file into an automated system rather than to a person.

If you hit that, the workaround is to render the rotated pages as images and rebuild the PDF from them — which fixes the orientation permanently and loses the selectable text. Given the choice, a lossless rotation that works everywhere a human will open it is the better default.

Two things people expect that this is not

180° is not a mirror. It turns the page upside down. A page that was scanned back-to-front and reads as mirror writing cannot be fixed by rotation at all, because mirroring is a different operation — no amount of turning will make reversed text read correctly.

A landscape page is not necessarily a mistake. Mixed documents legitimately contain landscape pages for wide tables, plans and charts. Before rotating everything to portrait, check whether those pages are meant to be that way.

One practical tip: if a scanned document is going through text recognition, rotate it first. OCR reads orientation, and upside-down text either fails outright or comes back as nonsense.

Nothing leaves your browser

The rotation happens on your own device. Given that the documents needing rotation are overwhelmingly scans — contracts, invoices, medical letters, identity documents, anything that went through an office scanner — not uploading them is worth more here than the convenience it costs. There is also no page limit and no daily quota, because there is no server doing the work.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I rotate just one page instead of the whole document?

Yes, and that is the main reason to use this one. Every page appears as a thumbnail and each rotates independently, so you can fix the three pages that went through the scanner sideways and leave the other forty alone. Quick buttons handle the case where the whole document is turned.

Does rotating reduce the quality of my PDF?

No. It sets a rotation value on the page and changes nothing else — the content is not redrawn or re-compressed. Text stays selectable, scanned image quality is untouched, the file size barely moves, and it is effectively instant even on a 200-page document.

Why does a page look upright in my reader but sideways in the file?

Because a PDF page can already carry its own rotation setting. This tool reads that setting and shows each thumbnail already turned to match, so the grid shows what your reader shows and the pages that look wrong really are wrong.

Is there any downside to this kind of rotation?

One. The rotation is stored as a property of the page rather than baked into the pixels, so it relies on the program opening the file to honour it. Every modern reader, browser and print driver does, but an older application or an automated extraction script may show the original orientation.

Can it fix a page that was scanned back to front?

No. Mirror-image text needs flipping, not rotating, and rotation cannot reverse it however many times you turn the page. 180 degrees turns a page upside down; it does not mirror it.

Should I rotate before or after running text recognition?

Before. OCR reads orientation, so upside-down or sideways text either fails or comes back as nonsense.
