Latin or plausible English — this is the real decision

Most generators give you Latin and stop. The choice between Latin and readable-looking filler changes how a design review goes, so it is worth making deliberately.

Use Latin when you want the text ignored. That is the original purpose: a reviewer who cannot read the words has no choice but to look at the layout, the hierarchy, the rhythm of the type. For your own work, and for reviews with designers, Latin is the better tool precisely because it is meaningless.

Use the Business or Tech pools when Latin gets in the way — and with non-designers it usually does. Show a client a page of Latin and a predictable amount of the conversation goes on "what language is that?" and "is this the final wording?". Plausible English filler lets them see the page as a page. It also shows realistic word lengths and line breaks for the kind of content that will actually go there, which Latin only approximates.

And the counter-argument, which is real: readable filler invites people to review the copy rather than the design, and you get feedback on sentences nobody wrote. It is also much easier to miss, because it does not look wrong. Latin screams "unfinished"; a paragraph about synergistic deliverables does not.

A reasonable rule: Latin while you are designing, plausible English when you are presenting to someone who is not a designer, and neither once real copy exists — placeholder text left in a layout hides the fact that nobody has written the real thing yet, which is usually the actual problem.

Why "Lorem ipsum" at all

It is not nonsense invented for the purpose. It is a scrambled, partly mangled passage from Cicero's De Finibus Bonorum et Malorum, written in 45 BC, and printers have used it as specimen text since at least the 1500s.

The reason it persists is that it works: the distribution of letters and the average word length are close enough to ordinary Latin-alphabet prose that a block of it looks like text, while being impossible to read. That combination is the whole point, and it is why a block of repeated "test test test" is a poor substitute — it has the wrong texture and the wrong line breaks, so the layout you are judging is not the layout you will get.

Leaving the "Start with Lorem ipsum…" option on begins the first paragraph with the familiar opening line, which is the convention and makes it obvious at a glance that the text is placeholder.

The HTML option

Wrapping in <p> or <div> tags saves the small irritation of adding them by hand to every paragraph. Use <p> for prose, which is what it is for; <div> when you are filling layout containers rather than body text. Choose None when the text is going into a design tool, a CMS field, or anywhere that would show the tags as literal characters.

The actual risk: shipping it

Placeholder text has gone out on live websites, in printed brochures, in app store listings, in annual reports and on at least one product package. It happens because it survives in a template, a component that nobody reviewed, an alt attribute, a meta description, an empty-state message, or the second tab of something that was only ever checked on the first.

The fix is thirty seconds and worth building into your process: search the whole project for lorem before anything goes live — the codebase, the CMS, the design file, the copy deck. It is the single highest-value check in this whole page, and using the plausible English pools makes it more important rather than less, because that filler will not catch anyone's eye on the way past.

One related note: Lorem ipsum is deliberately meaningless, so it should never be left anywhere it will be read by a machine that matters — a page title, a meta description, an image alt attribute. Search engines will index it, and it looks exactly like the abandoned page it makes yours resemble.
