What is Change Image Background?

Change Image Background replaces what is behind the subject of a photo with a solid color, a gradient or an image of your own. The subject is detected automatically — there is no rectangle to drag around and no outline to trace — and the preview updates as you change the background, so you can try several before downloading one.

The white-background job

Most people arrive here with the same specific task: a photo of a person that needs a plain background for a CV, a visa or ID application, a staff directory or a marketplace listing. Pick Solid Color, set the picker to white, check the preview, download. It takes about as long as reading this paragraph, and because nothing is uploaded you can do it with a passport photo without thinking twice about where the file ends up.

Colors, gradients, or your own image

Solid Color gives you a full picker, so you can match a brand color exactly rather than choosing from a handful of presets. Gradient has eight presets — Sky, Sunset, Violet, Forest, Peach, Studio, Ember and Night — and a custom from-and-to pair if none of them fit. Upload Image places your own photo behind the subject, scaled to cover the frame so it fills the space without being stretched out of shape.

You can save the result as a PNG or a JPG. PNG for quality and for anything with a soft edge; JPG when you need a smaller file for an upload form with a size limit.

How the detection behaves

The automatic detection is a portrait model, so it is strongest on photos of people. It gets a few seconds to produce a result, and if it cannot — because it is still loading, because the connection is slow, or because there is no person in the shot — the tool falls back to colour-based detection, which reads the background from the edges of the frame inward. That fallback works well against an even background and less well against a cluttered one. The tool always tells you which method produced the result you are looking at.

Fixing an edge you are not happy with

The Edge tightness slider moves the cut point of the detection between 35% and 85%. If the old background is bleeding through around the outline, raise it. If the subject's hair or shoulders are being eaten into, lower it. On a photo where colour detection was used instead, the same slider becomes Colour tolerance and controls how much of the background gets taken.

Related tools

If you want a transparent cutout rather than a new background, use Remove Background from Image and download a PNG. Blur Image Background keeps the real background and blurs it, which often looks more natural than a replacement for a video-call headshot, and Profile Photo Maker sizes a finished image for profile pictures.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I change a photo background to white?

Upload the photo, leave the background type on Solid Color, and set the color picker to white. The subject is detected automatically and the preview shows the result immediately, so you can check the edges before downloading.

Is my photo uploaded to a server?

The detection and the background replacement both run in your browser on your own device, so in normal use the photo is not uploaded. That is what makes it reasonable to use for ID and passport photos.

Can I use my own image as the new background?

Yes. Choose Upload Image and pick any image file. It is scaled to cover the frame, so it fills the whole background without being stretched or distorted.

Should I save as PNG or JPG?

PNG keeps the most quality and handles soft edges better, so it is the better default. Choose JPG when you need a smaller file, for example when an application form limits the upload size.

Does it work on photos that are not of people?

The automatic detection is tuned for people. For other subjects the tool falls back to colour-based background detection, which works well when the background is fairly even and struggles when it is busy. The tool tells you which method it used.

The edge does not look clean. What can I fix?

Use the Edge tightness slider. Raise it if the old background is showing around the outline, lower it if the subject is being cut into. A photo taken against an evenly lit, uncluttered background will always cut out more cleanly than one taken against a busy scene.
