What is Blur Image Background?

Blur what is behind the subject of a photo while the subject itself stays sharp. The subject is found automatically — there is no shape to draw — and you set how strong the blur is with one slider. It runs in your browser, so the photo is never uploaded.

Usually this is about hiding something

Blurring a background is often treated as a styling choice, but most people arrive with something specific to hide: a cluttered room behind a video-call headshot, a whiteboard with client information on it, documents on a desk, other people's children in the background of a school photo, a house number or street sign.

For that job, turn the blur up. A gentle blur looks tasteful but leaves text readable and faces recognisable; a strong one removes the information. The slider runs from 1 to 20 and starts at 10, which is a natural-looking middle. If your reason for blurring is privacy rather than aesthetics, push it toward 20 and check the preview at full size before downloading.

This is not the same as portrait mode

Worth understanding, because it sets expectations correctly. A camera's portrait mode produces optical blur: things further away are blurred more than things nearer, light sources turn into soft circles, and the falloff is gradual because it comes from physics.

This applies one even blur to everything that is not the subject, regardless of distance. On a photo where the background is all roughly the same depth — a wall, a room, a garden — the result is convincing. On a scene with obvious depth, a corridor or a landscape, it can look flat, because everything blurs by the same amount. That is the honest limit of doing this after the photo was taken rather than in the lens.

It works best on photos of people

The automatic detection uses a portrait model, so people are what it recognises reliably — headshots, full-body shots, group photos. For a pet, a product or an object it will usually find no subject, say so, and fall back to colour-based detection, which separates the background by colour instead. That works against an even background and struggles against a busy one. The tool tells you which method produced your result.

If the edge is not clean, the Edge tightness slider adjusts where the cut between subject and background falls. Raise it if the sharp area bleeds into the background, lower it if the subject's hair or shoulders are being blurred.

Remove Background from Image removes the background entirely and gives you a transparent PNG. Change Image Background replaces it with a colour or another image, which is the better option for a CV or ID photo, and Profile Photo Maker crops a finished photo to profile-picture sizes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is my photo uploaded to blur it?

No. Both the subject detection and the blur happen in your browser on your own device, so the photo is never transmitted — which matters when the reason you are blurring is that something private is in the background.

How much blur do I need to hide something?

More than you think. The slider goes from 1 to 20 and starts at 10, which looks natural but can leave text readable and faces recognisable. If the point is privacy rather than style, push it toward 20 and check the preview at full size.

Is this the same as portrait mode on a phone?

No. Portrait mode produces optical blur, where distant things blur more than near ones. This applies one even blur to everything that is not the subject, which looks convincing when the background is all roughly the same distance away and flatter in a scene with obvious depth.

Does it work on photos that are not of people?

The automatic detection is tuned for people. For a pet, product or object it usually finds no subject and falls back to colour-based detection, which works well against an even background and poorly against a busy one. The tool tells you which method it used.

The edge between sharp and blurred looks wrong.

Use the Edge tightness slider. Raise it if the sharp area is bleeding into the background, lower it if the subject's hair or shoulders are being blurred. Photos taken against an evenly lit, uncluttered background always separate more cleanly.

What file do I get back?

A JPG, since the whole frame is filled and there is no transparency to preserve. There is no watermark and no signup.
