What is Meme Generator?

Make a meme from your own picture with the classic white Impact text and black outline, top and bottom. The preview updates as you type, there is no watermark on the result, no account, and the image is never uploaded.

You bring the image

This has no template library. If you came looking for Drake or Distracted Boyfriend, a template site will get you there faster.

What this is for is the meme made from a picture you already have: a screenshot from a group chat, a photo of a colleague mid-sentence, something from the office, a family picture. Those are the ones you would rather not upload to a meme site at all — and they are also the ones that actually land, because the audience is in on it.

Why the outline matters more than the font

Meme text is white with a black outline for a practical reason, not just tradition. Photos are busy, and white text on a pale patch of a photo disappears. The outline guarantees the words stay readable wherever they land.

The outline width runs from 0 to 12 and starts at 3, which suits most images. Push it higher on a busy or high-contrast picture; drop it toward 1 on a plain background where a heavy outline just looks clumsy. Setting it to 0 removes the outline, and on most photographs you will immediately see why nobody does that.

Impact is the default because it is the meme typeface and the reason memes look like memes. The other three are there when you want a different tone — Comic Sans deliberately, Georgia for something drier.

The font size scales with the image

Size is set as a percentage of the picture's height rather than in fixed pixels, from 4% to 20%, starting at 10%. That means the same setting looks right on a small screenshot and a large photo, instead of being tiny on one and enormous on the other. The text also defaults to uppercase, which is the convention — switch to "as typed" when the joke depends on the capitalisation.

No watermark, and nothing uploaded

Several well-known meme makers stamp their own branding onto anything made on a free account, which is why so many of their competitors advertise "no watermark" in the title. There is none here, and no signup either.

Everything happens in the page, so a screenshot with names, a work photo or a picture of your kids is not travelling to anyone's server to have two lines of text put on it.

Add Text to Image places text anywhere on an image rather than in the fixed top-and-bottom meme layout. Crop Image tightens the framing first, which usually improves a meme more than any text setting, and Compress Image reduces the file size for sharing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does it have meme templates?

No. This works from an image you upload rather than a template library, so it suits memes made from your own photos and screenshots. If you want a well-known template, a dedicated template site will be quicker.

Is there a watermark on the finished meme?

No watermark and no signup. Several well-known meme makers brand anything made on a free account, which is why so many alternatives advertise no watermark — there is nothing added here.

Is my image uploaded anywhere?

No. Everything happens in your browser, so a screenshot of a group chat, a work photo or a family picture never leaves your device.

Why is the text white with a black outline?

Because photos are busy and white text disappears against pale areas. The outline keeps the words readable wherever they fall. Increase the outline width on a busy image and reduce it on a plain background.

Can I change the font and text size?

Yes. Impact is the default meme typeface, with Arial, Comic Sans and Georgia as alternatives. The size is a percentage of the image height rather than fixed pixels, so the same setting looks right on both a small screenshot and a large photo.

Can I keep my own capitalisation?

Yes. Text is uppercased by default because that is the convention, but switch the text style to "as typed" when the joke depends on how it is written.
