What is Edit PDF?
Change the text that is already in a PDF, or add your own text, shapes, whiteout and freehand drawing on top. The rest of the page is left exactly as it was — the document is not flattened into images, which is what separates this from most free PDF editors. Nothing is uploaded.
Your page stays sharp and searchable
The quality difference, and it is worth understanding because it is invisible until it matters.
The usual shortcut a free PDF editor takes is to render every page to a picture, let you draw on it, and save the pictures as a new PDF. It is much easier to build, and it quietly destroys the document: text stops being selectable, the file cannot be searched, a screen reader cannot read it, the file size balloons, and everything looks slightly soft — especially when printed.
This tool does not do that. It keeps the original page content intact, and touches only what you actually changed. So a fifty-page contract with one corrected date comes out with forty-nine and a half pages completely untouched — same crisp text, same searchability, same file size.
That makes it suitable for a document you will keep, print, submit or archive, which the flattening editors really are not.
Editing existing text, and the honest catch
Click a piece of existing text and you can edit it in place. That is genuinely unusual in a free browser tool, and it works well for the common cases: a typo, a wrong date, a changed figure, a name, a phone number.
Two things to know about how it is done, because both are visible in the result.
The replacement font is a standard one. When you change a piece of text, it is redrawn using one of the standard PDF fonts rather than the document's original typeface. For an ordinary document set in a common serif or sans-serif face, the difference is hard to spot. For anything set in a distinctive brand font, the edited line will not match its neighbours. Look at the result before sending it.
The original text is covered, not deleted. Changed text is hidden behind a rectangle sampled from the page background and the new wording is drawn over the top. Visually that is seamless. But the original wording is still inside the file, and anyone who copies the text out or runs an extraction tool can read what it used to say.
That has one firm consequence: do not use this to change a sensitive value. Editing a salary, a price, a name, a date of birth or a bank detail leaves the original underneath, recoverable in seconds. For those, retype the document from scratch, or export a fresh PDF from the original source file.
For a typo, a corrected date on your own paperwork, or filling in a form, none of that matters and the tool is genuinely convenient.
What you can add
Text anywhere on the page, which is how you fill in a form that has no fillable fields — the commonest reason anyone opens a PDF editor.
Whiteout covers something with a clean block. Useful for tidying a scan or hiding a letterhead. The same caveat as above applies with more force: whiteout hides, it does not delete, so if the thing underneath is confidential this is not the tool. See the Redact PDF page, which explains the problem and the proper solution.
Shapes for boxes, highlights, arrows and marking up a drawing.
Freehand drawing for a quick annotation or a signature-like mark — though for a real signature, Add Signature to PDF has a proper three-step flow with pdf.js click-to-place.
Everything you add is composited as a transparent overlay on top of the untouched page, so your additions never degrade the original content.
Use a desktop browser
A practical recommendation rather than a defect.
This is a layered editor — the page underneath, your added objects, and editable overlays sitting on every piece of existing text. Working it needs precise clicking, dragging, selection and typing into small targets. On a phone screen that is genuinely difficult, and the more complex the page the worse it gets.
So use a laptop or desktop with a mouse or trackpad. If you only have a phone and only need to fill in a form, a dedicated mobile PDF app will serve you better than any browser editor.
A related note: a long or graphically heavy PDF is real work for the browser, since each page has to be rendered and layered. Expect a pause on opening a big file, and if you only need to change one page, consider extracting it first.
When to do something else instead
Being straight about the alternatives, because for some jobs editing a PDF is the wrong approach entirely.
If you have the original file — the Word document, the spreadsheet, the design file — edit that and export a new PDF. It will always be better than editing the PDF, and it takes less time than people expect.
If the PDF is a scan, there is no text to edit. A scan is a picture of a page, so clicking a word does nothing. You can add text on top of it, but you cannot change what is printed. To get editable text out of a scan you need optical character recognition first.
If you are restructuring the document — reordering, deleting or merging pages — those are separate operations and the dedicated tools are quicker and lossless.
If the change is sensitive, see the section above: retype it.
Nothing is uploaded. The PDF is opened and rewritten inside your browser, which matters here because the documents people edit are contracts, invoices, applications, certificates and correspondence.
