What is CSV to Excel Converter?

Convert a CSV into a real Excel workbook you can format, filter and chart. Drop one file and you get one .xlsx back. Drop several and you get a single workbook containing all of them — one sheet per file, each sheet named after the file it came from. It all runs in your browser, so nothing is uploaded.

Several CSVs, one workbook

This is the part other converters do not do. Exports usually arrive split: twelve monthly sales files, one CSV per region, a separate download for each report. Converting them one at a time gives you twelve separate workbooks that you then have to combine by hand, copying and pasting between windows.

Select them all at once here instead and they become a single .xlsx with a tab for each. Sheet names come from the filenames, so january.csv becomes a sheet called january — and Excel caps sheet names at 31 characters, so very long filenames are shortened to fit. Once it is one workbook you can write formulas across the sheets, which is usually the reason you wanted it in Excel rather than CSV in the first place.

Delimiters are detected for you

CSV is a looser standard than the name suggests. Files exported by European software typically separate fields with semicolons rather than commas, and some systems use tabs or pipes. Getting this wrong is what produces a spreadsheet with everything crammed into column A.

The delimiter setting defaults to Auto-detect, which samples the file and picks the character that behaves like a separator. That handles almost everything. If a file is unusual enough to confuse it — free-text fields full of semicolons, for instance — set the delimiter explicitly. You can also tell it whether the first row is a header, which decides whether that row becomes your column titles or an ordinary row of data.

One thing to watch: leading zeros

Excel treats anything that looks like a number as a number, and this conversion follows the same rule. A ZIP code stored as 01234 arrives as 1234, and a long product ID may be displayed in scientific notation. That is standard spreadsheet behaviour rather than something unique to this tool, but it is worth knowing before you convert a file full of postcodes, phone numbers or account references.

If a column must keep its exact original text, format it as Text in Excel after opening, or keep the CSV as the authoritative copy and use the workbook for analysis only.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I convert several CSV files into one Excel workbook?

Yes, and it is the main reason to use this tool. Select all the files at once and you get a single .xlsx containing one sheet per CSV, each named after its source file, instead of a separate workbook for every file.

What are the sheets named?

After the source filenames by default, so january.csv becomes a sheet called january. Excel limits sheet names to 31 characters, so longer filenames are shortened. You can also set a custom name instead.

My CSV uses semicolons. Will it still work?

Yes. The delimiter setting defaults to Auto-detect, which samples the file and picks the right separator, and semicolon-separated files from European software are handled. You can also set comma, semicolon, tab or pipe explicitly.

Why did the leading zero disappear from my ZIP codes?

Because Excel treats anything that looks like a number as a number, so 01234 becomes 1234. This is standard spreadsheet behaviour rather than something specific to this tool. Format the column as Text in Excel after opening, or keep the CSV as your authoritative copy.

Is my data uploaded to a server?

No. The conversion runs in your browser on your own device, which matters for CSV exports in particular since they often contain customer records, payroll or pricing. Nothing is transmitted and nothing is stored.

Does the first row become my column headers?

If you tell it to. The First Row setting defaults to treating row one as a header, which makes it the column titles in Excel. Switch it to Not a Header when your file starts straight into data.
