What is Convert Image Format?

Convert images between JPG, PNG, WebP, AVIF, BMP and GIF. Add several files and they all convert in one pass, coming back as a ZIP. It runs in your browser, so nothing is uploaded, and there is no account or conversion quota.

Converting to JPG will remove transparency

This is the one thing worth knowing before you click, because it cannot be undone afterwards. PNG and WebP can store a transparent background. JPG cannot — the format has no way to record it. So when you convert a transparent PNG to JPG, the transparent areas have to become some colour, and here they become white.

For a photograph that never had transparency, this changes nothing. For a logo, an icon, a signature or a cut-out product shot, it means you end up with a white rectangle behind the subject — usually visible the moment you place it on a coloured background. If the transparency matters, convert to PNG or WebP instead, both of which keep it. The same white fill applies when converting to BMP.

Which format to choose

JPG for photographs going anywhere that needs universal compatibility. PNG for logos, screenshots, diagrams and anything needing transparency or perfectly sharp edges. WebP for websites — noticeably smaller than JPG at the same visual quality, supported by every current browser, and it keeps transparency. AVIF is smaller again and the best choice for a modern site, though support in older software is patchier. BMP and GIF exist for older systems that ask for them specifically.

If you are converting for a website, WebP is usually the right answer and AVIF the ambitious one. If you are converting because a form rejected your upload, it almost always wants JPG or PNG.

When your browser cannot do it

The conversion uses your browser's own image encoder, which means the available formats depend on the browser you are using. AVIF and GIF in particular are not supported everywhere. Rather than silently handing you a PNG with the wrong file extension — which is what some converters do — this tool checks the result and tells you plainly that the format is unavailable, so you can pick another. If AVIF fails, try WebP; it is nearly as small and works everywhere.

Several at once

Add multiple images and each appears as a frame you can reorder, rotate or remove before converting. They all convert to the same target format and download together as a single ZIP, which is the quick way through a folder of screenshots that all need to become JPGs.

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens to a transparent background when I convert to JPG?

It becomes white, and the change is permanent. JPG has no way to store transparency, so every transparent pixel has to be filled. For a logo, icon or cut-out image, convert to PNG or WebP instead - both keep the transparency.

Which format should I convert to?

JPG for photos needing universal compatibility, PNG for logos, screenshots and anything with transparency, WebP for websites since it is noticeably smaller at the same quality, and AVIF when you want the smallest files and can accept patchier support in older software.

Can I convert several images at once?

Yes. Add them all, reorder or rotate any of them if you like, and they convert to the same target format in one pass and download together as a ZIP.

Why did it say my browser cannot export a format?

Conversion uses your browser's own image encoder, and AVIF and GIF are not supported in every browser. Rather than quietly giving you a mislabelled file, the tool tells you and asks you to pick another format. WebP is the best substitute for AVIF.

Are my images uploaded to a server?

No. Everything is converted in your browser on your own device, so nothing is transmitted and there is no conversion quota, no signup and no watermark.

Does converting reduce quality?

Converting to a lossy format - JPG, WebP or AVIF - re-encodes the image, which loses a little detail. Converting to PNG or BMP does not. Repeatedly converting the same file between lossy formats compounds the loss, so work from the original where you can.
